Week 9 Updates

For the coming week this is what I will need to prioritize:

  1. Add grain to all shots.

  2. Up the sampling on motion blur.

  3. Work on puddle reflections

  4. Brighten embers on shot 02 and 03

  5. Fix ice lighting on shot 03 (Comp)

  6. Add matte blur to shot 04

  7. Work on bloom on fire for shot 02 and 04

  8. Key light in shot 04 (Comp)

  9. Make BG plate in shot 03 more dynamic

  10. Add heat waves to all shots.

Heat Wave distortions

As per suggestion of the mentors, I started doing research into heat waves and how to successfully pull off the effect in nuke. I first begun looking up reference images on what realistic heat wave distortions look like.

To achieve this effect it was rather simple in nuke. I mainly used an "Idistort" node along with a noise and copy node. Doing it in this way allowed me to have control over how intense the heat distortion was by either changing the rate and size of the noise or changing the UV scale within the "Idistort" node.

Motion Blur, Grain, and Chromatic Aberration

For the motion blur for all our shots I simply upped the sampling up to 20 on all shots.

I also added grain to all the shots thanks to the assistants and suggestions of Molly to give our shots a more grungy look. The grain effect was done by simply combining a grain node, a luminance key, and a dissolve node. The effect is subtle, but it adds an additional layer of detail that I believe we have been looking for.
